General Chemistry I

Course Description

The first semester of a yearlong course in general chemistry. Topics include: matter and measurement, atoms and elements, molecules and compounds, stoichiometry, aqueous reactions, gases, thermodynamics (including enthalpy, entropy, and free energy), the quantum-mechanical model of the atom, periodic properties of elements, and models of chemical bonding. Problem-solving involves the use of algebra, including logarithms and the quadratic equation. Corequisite: Chemistry 111 (unless placed out of it with a mandatory qualifying exam taken online prior to the Fall semester) and Chemistry 135. Fee: $37.50
