General Chemistry I

Course Description
The first semester of a yearlong atoms-first general chemistry course. The topics covered in this course are: matter and measurement; atoms and molecules; the mathematical manipulations of amounts of material in terms of mass and moles; the quantum-mechanical model of the atom and periodic properties of elements, models of chemical bonding and molecular geometry; stoichiometry and chemical reactions; gases; intermolecular forces; and solids, liquids, and solutions. Problem-solving involves the use of algebra and scientific notation. Corequisites: Chemistry 111 (unless placed out of it with a mandatory qualifying exam taken online prior to registering for the course) and 135. Distribution areas: Quantitative Analysis, Scientific Inquiry. Course fee: $40.
