Beginning Contemporary Dance Practicum

Department(s)

Course Description

Contemporary dance is a form of theatrical performance realized through a variety of technical and cultural forms, compositional methods, and live and mediated performance practices. Contemporary dance choreographers and dancers approach movement as a substance through which they research, play, pose questions, and investigate the social, political, and ontological conditions of contemporary life. In this beginning-level course, students will gain skills to attune to, transform, vary, and amplify their body's movement. Classes will begin with a structured warm-up to develop strength, flexibility, alignment, and core engagement, and progress to longer movement phrases, improvisational activities, and traveling combinations. Through these practices, students will explore bodily organizations and shaping, spatial awareness and projection, varying relationships to musical timing and rhythmic precision, dynamic energy shifts, and more. Together, we will build technical proficiency and expressive range in a positive community context. No previous dance experience is necessary. May be repeated for credit; may not be taken P-D-F. Pre- or corequisite: Theater & Dance 232. Distribution area: Creative Production.
