Course Description

Your study of music theory should begin here if you have prior experience reading Western music notation (treble and/or bass clefs). Students without prior experience should complete Music 101 before taking this course. This course explores simple and compound time signatures, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads, and common terminology. Further topics may include: tonal harmony and basic part writing, non-harmonic tones, common chord modulation, and secondary dominant chords. Through a combination of written and aural exercises, this course provides a solid foundation for further study in music theory and musicianship. Prerequisite: Prior experience reading Western music notation (treble and/or bass clefs); or Music 101. Distribution areas: Creative Production, Quantitative Analysis, Studying the Past.
