From the original inhabitants to swashbuckling explorers to nuns to coerced laborers, this course examines the forces that combined to shape the early years of New Orleans, including being a center of commerce, slavery, rebellion, and cultural meetings as well as a site of colonial contestation. We will explore these years through primary sources as well as virtual sites of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century historical locations. Students will produce written source evaluations and create a brief final project. Distribution areas: Social Sciences, Studying the Past.
