Unstoppable climate change and its related injustices dominate-some might say rightly so!-our stories about the environment. Consequently, many of us feel despair, grief, and anxiety about the future of our planet. But what might it mean to instead shift our attention to hope? Rather than take an approach some might label "toxic positivity" to thinking about our very real problems, this course considers how we might deliberately, effectively, and politically think through and with environmental problems to find joy and possibility in the face of these challenges. We will examine art works, popular media, and literature as we work to imagine a future together. Student assignments may include creative and critical writing, presentations individually or in groups, and production of a final project (creative or critical).
