This class will survey the work of these influential auteurs, each of whom is celebrated for their distinctive visual storytelling styles and recurring themes. Though they hail from different parts of the world, work in discrete national film industries, and on the surface appear to be dissimilar artists, through careful scrutiny of their oeuvres we'll investigate the myriad ways in which their films transcend cultural boundaries and connect with each other and viewers from around the world. We'll look at these films through a variety of lenses, including representation, industrial concerns, auteurism, aesthetics, race, gender, and genre. This class features lectures, discussion, presentations, and writing assignments. Required weekly screenings.
