This course is a study of the philosophical and biblical themes of creation, suffering, evil, truth, and morality. The course emphasizes the differences in philosophical and biblical texts, while seeking areas of rapprochement, as in the divergence of philosophy and the Bible on creation, and the convergence of philosophy and the Bible on creativity as a response to suffering. Philosophers covered include Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Protagoras, Gadamer, and Fanon. Topics include metaphysics, aesthetics, philosophy of religion, epistemology, and political theology. Biblical texts include Genesis 1 and 2, the book of Job, the parables of Jesus, and several of the Pauline letters.
