Rhetoric, Gender, and Sexuality
Department(s)
Course Description
This course examines the power dynamics that have shaped conversations about sex, gender, and sexuality, and the relationships among them. We will look at a variety of contemporary debates in political, mass media, and cultural contexts, including reproductive health care and abortion access, the gendered dynamics of work and labor, consent and the ethics of sex, sex work, and representation in popular culture. We will explore theoretical frameworks that consider how gender and sexuality are shaped by rhetoric. We will also practice public argument and advocacy related to gender and sexuality, and consider our own positions in contemporary debates. Assignments include an academic paper, an op-ed, a multimedia art/activist project, and an educational or advocacy project aimed at a public audience. May be elected as Rhetoric, Writing, and Public Discourse 250. Distribution areas: Cultural Pluralism, Humanities, Power and Equity.
