207-A ST: Genes, Genomes & Genetics
Offered Fall (Cooley) 3 credits
This class builds upon the principles of molecular genetics and Mendelian inheritance introduced in Biology 102, emphasizing mechanisms of biological information flow and its regulation, the relationship between genotype and phenotype, and genome structure, organization, and replication in diverse biological systems. We'll cover aspects of genetic analysis that are widely used in biological research, including forward- and reverse-genetics strategies. Principles of Mendelian genetics will be considered in the context of research in gene discovery, developmental genetics, and functional genomics. Counts toward the Molecular/Cell subject requirement for Biology majors. May be taken for credit toward the Brain, Behavior, and Cognition major. Genetics Lab (Biology 206) can be taken along with this class as an accompanying lab when offered. Students may not earn credit for both Biology 205 and Biology 207-A. Prerequisites: Biology 102 and 102L (or Biology 111/111L) . Pre- or corequisite: Chemistry 245. Distribution area: None.
